Daniel will discuss the work of Access Now and other civil society organisations on AI, with a focus on the debates around AI ethics (e.g. ethics versus human rights, red lines, the problem of self-regulation) and the digital rights risks of facial recognition and other biometric profiling technologies. He will also provide an overview of policy debates on AI around the world, in particular the movement to ban facial recognition.

Daniel Leufer is an Europe Policy Analyst at Access Now's Brussels office. He works on issues around Artificial Intelligence and data protection, with a focus on facial recognition and other biometrics. Previously, he was hosted by Access Now as a Mozilla Fellow from October 2019 to July 2020. During his Mozilla Fellowship, he worked with Access Now to develop aimyths.org, a website that gathers resources to tackle eight of the most common myths and misconceptions about AI. He has a PhD in Philosophy from KU Leuven in Belgium and has worked on political philosophy (especially political dissidence), philosophy of technology, and the philosophy and sociology of war. He is also a member of the Working Group on Philosophy of Technology at KU Leuven. More info: accessnow.org/
