GROW: The Art and Science of Mushroom Cultivation

Fungi are organisms that have an enormous cultural potential that we are only just starting to discover. Some people even claim that they will save the world. For Antoni Gandia (M.Sc. in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology of Plants) fungi are a source of new materials that can replace many synthetics in the 21st century. They play an important role in our food systems as well as having great symbolical value. These are the reasons why scientists as well as artists are starting to work with them on many levels. The workshop takes place in a clean biological laboratory supported by the GROW platform for interdisciplinary art/science projects. 
Materialkosten: 20 € pro Studierender / pro Studierendem (werden bei Kursbeginn eingesammelt). Participants can take the infected substrates home, where it will turn into mycelium and eventually into mushrooms. They will also receive a manual that explains exactly what to do with the substrate at home.

Kursinhalte:
Day one introduces the basics of mushroom biology and the different cultivation methods whereafter we will start growing our own fungi. All participants receive a growing bag to harvest your own cultivated mushrooms.

Day two covers all the essentials to grow mushrooms in your own home following the famous PF Tek (Psilocybe Fanaticus Technique) which requires very little space and investment.

Day three brings the mushroom practice to the next level learning the ins and outs of advanced techniques in the sterile lab (making agar plates, breeding protocols, stock culture maintenance and how to build a clean room).

The workshop takes place in a clean biological laboratory supported by the GROW platform for interdisciplinary art/science projects. GROW is a collaboration between the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, initiated by Dr. Filipe Natalio (MLU) and Prof. Aart van Bezooijen (BURG).
