Prof. Matthias Görlich

Matthias Görlich, born in Mannheim in 1975,  took on the professorship for Communication Design/Information Design in the Design faculty at the start of the winter semester 2017/18. He had already held this positionas a substitute professor at BURG from March 2017 onwards. Since 2022 he is Pro-rector for Studies and Teaching of the Design Faculty at BURG. He studied Communication Design at Darmstadt University and at the Design2context Institute of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Since graduating with a ‘Diplom’ degree in 2000, he has been working with his studio in the area of design and concept development for art institutions such as the ‘Städel Museum’ and ‘Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt’, the ‘Architekturforum Zürich’, the ‘Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe’ in Hamburg and the ‘Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe’ and the ‘Haus der Kulturen der Welt’ in Berlin. He has also carried out commissioned projects for humanitarian and cultural-policy bodies such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in Jordan, the Goethe Institutes in Stockholm and Mumbai and the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights in Berlin. He is co-editor of the “Civic City Cahier” on the role of design in the development of socially integrative cities and of “Studienhefte Problemorientiertes Design (Study Journals for Problem-oriented Design)” by Adocs. In 2017, the book “Vergessene Schulen (Forgotten Schools)” on the issue of the politicisation of architectural education, which ge co-edited, was published by ‘Verlag Spector Books’.
Matthias Görlich has been involved in teaching since 2005. He previously worked at the University of Stuttgart, the Städelschule Frankfurt, Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and Zurich University of the Arts. He has also led numerous workshops at universities such as KRVIA Mumbai in India, ELISAVA in Barcelona, ENSAD‹Ž in Paris, GCU• in Cairo and ‚RWTH Aachen University.
