3D — BEYOND BASKETS, 9. SW Wintersemester 24/25
Evey KwongGK-Wahl, 3D . Dreidimensionales Gestalten, Master 2. Stj., Master 1. Stj., Bachelor 4. Stj., Bachelor 3. Stj., Wintersemester 2024, 3. Kompaktwoche (9.SW),
BEYOND BASKETS is a 1-week workshop, exploring endless possibilities of basket-weaving techniques with combinations of materials and a thematic approach.
The earliest baskets were made by coiling, twining, twisting and untwisting of plant fibres. Today, baskets are either niche-produced by craftspeople or overlooked as a craft practice. While basketry may no longer be relevant as a medium in and of itself, when combined with other media, it can cleverly hone problem-solving skills in a three-dimensional way.
In this workshop, you will learn coiling and plaiting weaving techniques. Following two days of hands-on and mental exercises, you will complete a final assignment, realised with the techniques you have learned.
During the work process, you are free to experiment with different approaches to connecting the basket-weaving techniques with your discipline or a theme. Some of you will make objects based on material experimentation, historical connections, the idea of repair and restoration, or your own design.

Evey Kwong
Kontakt
A designer and researcher. Evey Kwong’s work explores themes of craft-based technology by connecting with the origins of material knowledge, humans, and the environment. Through collaboration with craftspeople and experts from the arts, history, and ecology, Evey opens up possibilities for multidisciplinary dialogues.
Evey strongly values the historical perspective on designing and making things, which motivates the otherwise digitally oriented designer to actively practise crafts as a way of engaging with people and tradition. According to her, this added dimension deepens her creative work and enables her to translate ancient techniques to current times.
Her works have been exhibited at the Museum of European Cultures [DE], HOW&WOW BASK IT! [organised by Crafts Council Nederland for the Dutch Design Week] and Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden [DE].
